Why Scripture Feels Hard When You Love God
For the overwhelmed Christian mom who wants to be close to God but feels too tired to stay consistent.
If you’ve ever wondered why opening your Bible feels harder the more you desire God, you’re not alone. Many Christian moms deeply value Scripture yet struggle to stay connected in busy, exhausting seasons. This post explores why that resistance happens, why it’s not failure, and how gentle practices can help you remain close to God without pressure.
I Know Scripture Is Important… So Why Is It So Hard?
If you love God, you’ve probably asked this question quietly in your heart.
You believe in the power of God’s Word. You want to sit with it. You want Scripture to shape your thoughts, your motherhood, your faith.
And yet, some days, opening the Bible feels heavier than it should.
Not because you don’t care.
Not because you’re drifting away on purpose.
But because you’re tired.
This is something many Christian moms experience, and almost no one talks about it honestly.
Let’s Name the Real Struggle
For so many women, the issue isn’t a lack of desire for God.
It’s exhaustion.
Motherhood takes from every part of you. Your body, your emotions, your attention. By the time the house is quiet, there’s often very little left to give.
So when Scripture feels hard, shame sneaks in.
I should want this more.
Other women do this better.
Why can’t I just be disciplined?
But needing rest doesn’t mean you love God less. It means your capacity is smaller right now.
And God sees that.
The Quiet Pull Away From God
Here’s something important to understand, gently and without fear.
The enemy rarely pulls us away from God loudly.
Most of the time, he doesn’t try to convince us Scripture doesn’t matter. He doesn’t need us to stop believing.
Instead, the pull is quiet.
Distraction.
Discouragement.
The subtle feeling that sitting with God is just one more thing you can’t keep up with.
And often, the closer you desire to be with God, the more resistance you feel.
Not because you’re doing something wrong.
But because closeness matters.
This Isn’t About Lowering the Value of Scripture
Let’s be clear.
God’s Word matters deeply.
Studying Scripture matters.
Knowing Scripture matters.
This isn’t about avoiding the Bible or replacing it with something easier.
What does need to change is the pressure we put on ourselves around how we come to God.
Scripture was never meant to be another place of performance or shame.
Sometimes faithfulness looks like deep study.
And sometimes it looks like staying connected in a way you can actually sustain.
Both matter.
Redefining Faithfulness in Tired Seasons
We often equate faithfulness with intensity.
Long quiet times. Perfect routines. Focused study every day.
But Scripture itself shows us that God meets people where they are.
Faithfulness doesn’t disappear when your energy is low. It simply looks different.
Sometimes it looks like five quiet minutes.
Sometimes it looks like writing one Name of God and letting it steady your heart.
Small steps toward God still count.
How Tracing Scripture Helped Me Stay Close
I used to believe the answer was more discipline.
If I really loved God, I told myself, I would try harder. Wake earlier. Focus better. Push through the resistance.
Instead, the pressure made Scripture feel heavier.
Tracing God’s Word changed that for me.
Not because it replaced studying Scripture, but because it helped me stay connected when my mind felt scattered and my body was tired.
Slowing down enough to write Scripture quieted the noise in my head. It gave my hands something to do while my heart settled.
I didn’t do less with God.
I stayed close in a way I could sustain.
In this short video, you’ll see me lettering Emmanuel. Nothing fancy. Just tracing, repeating, praying, and sitting still long enough to let the truth settle in. God is with me.
If you’d like to slow down alongside me, you can watch the video here. Let it be a small pause in your day. No pressure to create. Just space to rest in His presence.
You’re Not Failing If Scripture Feels Hard
If opening your Bible feels difficult right now, don’t rush to label it as failure.
Ask a gentler question instead.
What kind of closeness with God is possible for me in this season?
God isn’t asking you to meet Him where you were five years ago.
He meets you where you are today.
Sometimes that looks like deep study.
Sometimes it looks like one quiet page.
And both are acts of faithfulness.
A Gentle Invitation
You don’t need a perfect routine to return to God.
You don’t need ideal mornings or uninterrupted quiet time.
You just need a way to stay near Him that fits your real life.
That’s why I created a 30-day traceable devotional focused on the Names of God. Each day offers one Scripture, one Name, and a quiet space to trace, reflect, and pray.
It’s not about doing more. It’s about staying connected.
If Scripture has felt hard lately, this is an invitation to come gently. One page at a time. One Name at a time.
You can explore the 30-day Names of God devotional here and begin again without pressure.
